I Would Rather Sneeze but Keep a Pet

By Whisker Wonders Kenya,

When Lilly tried to discourage her kids from adopting pets, she expected resistance but not the bold declaration she got from her daughter:

“Mum, I would rather sneeze but keep a pet.”

Leila the dog

The kids have always loved animals. Her son is a cat lover, and her daughter adores dogs. Both have a history of allergies, so Lilly’s initial refusal was rooted in real health concerns, which the kids have since learned to manage.

And because if you can’t beat them, you join them, Lilly eventually gave in. She allowed each child to adopt the pet of their dreams — with one agreement: they had to be fully responsible pet owners.

That’s how Woody the cat and Leila the dog joined the family. 🐱🐶

Dedication Beyond Expectations

From day one, the kids proved they meant it. Woody and Leila are bathed weekly with warm water and special shampoo, wrapped in clean towels, and spritzed with pet-friendly perfume.

Feeding time is never missed. The younger sister won’t eat until Woody and Leila are fed. Grooming is taken seriously: Woody’s fur is trimmed regularly, deep grooming is done monthly, and vaccinations are always on time.

The family home even changed — carpets were removed, rooms are vacuumed daily, and every effort is made to manage allergies.

“The doctor said there was no shortcut, we had to keep the pets away,” Lilly recalls. “But my people figured things out and allergies are no longer a threat!”

“It hasn’t been easy,” she adds with a laugh, “but we manage.”

Kids Who Make Sacrifices

The son never misses Leila’s daily walk, rain or shine. His sister spends hours playing with Woody, following him on his little house adventures.

Traveling is the real test.

“When we go to shagz (upcountry), we carry Woody and Leila along,” Lilly says. “If I refuse, my daughter would rather stay home to take care of the pets.”

When Love Converts the Whole Family

Their passion for animals has even converted their dad. He now brings Woody and Leila’s shampoo and perfumes from Dubai.

Clearly, what started as a casual request to keep pets has turned into a full family affair, and yes, a dent in the household finances!

More Than Pets

The sneezes might still come, but they pale compared to the joy, laughter, and life lessons Woody and Leila have brought home.

The furry friends are now family. Caring for them has taught the kids responsibility, empathy, and patience — lessons that have even turned their parents into animal lovers.

“And that makes me truly happy. Even I must admit — I’m now a converted pet lover,” says Lilly. 🐶🐱

🐾 Whisker Wonders Reflection

Sometimes love means choosing sneezes over a quiet, pet-less house. Pets may test our patience, our allergies, or even our wallets but in return, they teach children responsibility, empathy, and unconditional love.

Children’s passion for animals is contagious often melting the toughest resistance and turning parents into proud animal lovers too.
