Many people working in Kenya, especially expats, often adopt pets for companionship and comfort while living abroad. My colleague was no different. A true cat lover, she transformed one tiny rescue kitten into a pampered cat with a life full of love, care and commitment, a true testament to lifelong pet parenting.
From the Floods to Forever: How Milly Was Found
The little tabby, barely six weeks old, had been washed away during the March 2018 floods and ended up near the apartment block where she was living. Soaking wet, injured, and weighing almost nothing, the kitten was found by the security guard, who knew my colleague loved cats.
“It was about 10 p.m., raining heavily, and the kitten was soaking wet,” she told me.
“He handed the kitten to me at the gate and said, ‘Here is your cat.’ I told him I didn’t have a cat, but he ignored me and passed her through the window. So of course, I had to take her in.”
The plan was simple: get her treated, then find her a home. But anyone who has ever had a kitten knows, after two weeks of watching them bounce around, you’re hooked.
Milly was in rough shape. The vet estimated she was just six weeks old. She had a serious infection, a deep wound on her neck, a damaged ear, and the tip of her tail had to be removed.
“She was lucky to be found,” she said. “I don’t think she would’ve survived another night.”
A Life of Love and Luxury
Once in her care, my colleague ensured Milly lacked nothing. She received proper nutrition, regular vet check-ups, vaccinations, and was spayed at the right time.
Milly wasn’t just a pet—she became family.
And she had personality.
She loved playing in the green garden compound at home. Every evening, as soon as her new-found mum opened the door, she would dash out—eager to roll in the grass, chase insects, or stretch lazily under the sun. That garden was her playground, and she ruled it with grace.
Caring Beyond Home: Lucy, the Office Cat
But Milly wasn’t the only one under my colleague’s care.
At the office, we had another cat—Lucy—who had wandered in one day and simply never left. She ensured Lucy had a steady supply of food, clean water, and a warm place to sleep.
When Lucy gave birth to a litter of eight, she helped find homes for all the kittens. Soon after, she got Lucy spayed to prevent another surprise litter. That’s just the kind of person she was—compassionate, kind, and committed to the well-being of animals.
A Journey of Love: From Nairobi to London
After two years of work in Kenya, she had to leave. But she didn’t leave Milly behind.
She arranged everything—export permits, European passport, vet clearance, and a cozy travel carrier. And just like that, they boarded the plane together, bound for a new chapter.
Now, Milly the pampered cat lives in London.
She naps in sunny windowsills, lounges on plush cushions, and has her meals served with gourmet precision. She went from Nairobi streets to being a full-time house queen in the UK.
Because adoption isn’t temporary. It’s a lifetime commitment—across cities, countries, and time zones.

Love doesn’t stay behind. When you adopt a pet, you promise them forever. And Milly? She got her forever in London.
