My grandmother has had several cats. But there was this one damn tabby-and-white cat who loved milk more than anything else. She was special. She had no regard for rules, guests, or even God’s presence.
It happened during a visit from our local pastor Ben. We had lunch ready for everyone—warm ugali and bowls of fresh milk to go with it. Just before we could eat, the pastor offered to lead us in prayer. A holy moment, right?
We bowed our heads. Eyes closed. Silence filled the room.
But not for her.
That damn cat crept in and took advantage of the silence. She leapt onto the table with the confidence of a thief who knew we were too holy to do anything about it. She found the milk—and got to work.
Sip by sip, she drained the Pastor’s milk bowl clean. Not anyone else. But Pastor’s.
And the prayer? It went on and on.
We couldn’t open our eyes. Couldn’t whisper or twitch. Just sat there, helpless—hearing the cat lick the bowl dry. She smacked her lips, and disappeared like a ghost.
By the time the final “Amen” landed, so had the last drop of milk.
The pastor reached for the bowl, paused… and stared. It was empty.
No one said a word. We just sat there, looked at each other, silently blaming the cat.
To this day, she remains a legend in our family.
Some cats beg politely. Others wait their turn.
But that one? That damn cat? She prayed with us… then feasted behind our backs.
