By Whisker Wonders Kenya,
Whenever I travel, whether upcountry or within the city, Iām heartbroken by what I seeāanimals lying lifeless by the roadside. Victims of speeding cars and careless drivers. Cows. Donkeys. Cats. Dogs. Even wild animals. Hit and left behind. No one stops.

Heartbreaking Sight
Itās a heartbreaking sight that repeats itself on nearly every journey. And it leaves me wondering: how many of these lives could have been saved, if someone had just braked?
Over the years, Iāve personally rescued several dogs hit by drivers who simply sped off. These werenāt just random animals. They were living beings, scaredābleeding, in paināwith no one to help them.
In a few of those cases, I called the KSPCA (Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals). Their swift and professional response gave some of these animals a second chance, and in other cases, a dignified end to their suffering.
Animal Rights & Freedoms
As a society, we need to do better. Animals are not disposable. They have rights too. According to the internationally recognised Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare, every animal deserves:
-
Freedom from hunger and thirst
-
Freedom from discomfort
-
Freedom from pain, injury, or disease
-
Freedom to express normal behaviour
-
Freedom from fear and distress
But how can they enjoy these freedoms if we donāt value their lives?
Every time we take the wheel, we share the road with more than just other drivers. We share it with animalsādomestic, stray, and wild. It only takes a second to slow down, to stay alert, to avoid a tragedy.
So next time youāre driving especially in rural areas or near animal crossing zones, please brake for animals. That small act of care could save a life. Because their lives matter too. š¾
