Whiskers & People: A Well-Spent Weekend with Pet Lovers

By Cecilia Kimuyu,

On that fateful Saturday, the mission was clear—volunteer at a vaccination and sterilization campaign organised by the Kenya Society for the Protection and Care of Animals (KSPCA) at Loresho Secondary School. 🐾

And I couldn’t leave my VIPs behind. At dawn, I got Luna and Missy ready—though not without drama. The moment they saw the carriers, they nearly escaped. But with some gentle petting, we were on our way.

We arrived at the School shortly after 8 a.m. It was chilly but thankfully dry. Masked up and bundled against the cold, I offloaded my precious luggage—and jumped straight into volunteer mode.

What struck me most was the turnout. Organized by KSPCA, City County of Nairobi, KESCAVA, and the University of Nairobi, the event was clearly well-publicized—and the response, overwhelming.

Pet lovers came in droves

Pet lovers arrived in droves, and the cat queues kept growing. Proud cat parents came with carriers, baskets, or wrapped blankets. Some cats perched like royalty on shoulders, others clung quietly to chests, wide-eyed and curious.

It was beautiful chaos—fur flying, whiskers twitching, and tails peeking out everywhere.

Though fewer, dog lovers showed up with all kinds—from lap dogs to working breeds. The air buzzed with chatter, soft meows, and playful bark-offs. No one minded the flying fur—it was all part of the day’s joyful chaos.

As the queues moved, pet lovers shared stories about their furry companions. I chatted with many—asking about names, quirks, and rescue journeys. Though strangers, we connected like old friends.

One story stayed with me—a Grade 9 girl who came with her dad, carrying a white kitten in a paper bag. It was all she could afford as a pet carrier. With both hands gripping the bag, she made sure her tiny friend stayed safe. She’d brought her in for a simple health check—a quiet but powerful act of love.

Tearjerker moment

Then came the tearjerker! One pet parent broke down after her cat was injected—a raw, heartfelt moment that showed just how deeply we love our animals. Another grew emotional when her cats bolted during vaccination. The fear of the needle is real, but being from the neighborhood, there’s hope they found their way home.

Throughout the day, I witnessed so many small but beautiful gestures: pet parents gently washing their cats after little travel accidents (yes, public cat baths!), and wrapping them in blankets to keep them warm. Volunteers quietly filled water bottles for the animals, scooped poop from the ground, and ensured the space stayed clean and welcoming.

Umbrellas for cats

When the sun finally came out, umbrellas popped open—not for the people, but for the pets. Pet parents shielding their babies from the heat like royalty. The compassion in that space was truly palpable.

With hundreds of pet lovers in one place, it was powerful to see people from all walks of life—whether with purebreds or rescues—united in love and care, patiently doing what was best for their furry companions.

Like any curious pet parent, I lingered near the vaccination and surgical areas—quietly admiring the vets’ skill and care. It was inspiring to watch.

Between my volunteer tasks—assisting pet parents, carrying animals, and sneaking the occasional selfie with a sleepy kitten or playful pup—I felt completely at home among fellow animal lovers.

By 4 p.m., I was tired, fur-covered, but fulfilled. I packed up Luna and Missy—now dewormed and vaccinated—and headed home, heart full and already counting down to the next Pet Lovers Day.🐶 🐱

Every act of kindness—big or small—makes a difference in an animal’s life.

This was like a Hevenly gathering of Pets and Pet lovers! Pets are so loyal, more loyal than humans, they never hold grudges but remain true to their masters.

If only humans would be like Pets, the world would be a very wonderful place.

Their dedication to the well-being of their pets is truly admirable; they go above and beyond to provide love, care, and a nurturing environment. This deep bond fosters a sense of empathy and responsibility that enriches not only their lives but also the lives of those around them. Their enthusiasm for advocating for animal welfare and creating communities around their shared passion is inspiring. Ultimately, pet lovers remind us of the simple joys in life and the unconditional love that animals bring.

Love expressed in silence at it best, with a occasional meows and barks here and there. This event must have been so heavenly to the pets themselves as well as owners
