Missy: the Once-Stray Tabby Who Dumped me & Become My Mum's Queen

Missy, the once-stray tabby who stole my mum’s heart and changed our family forever.

By Whisker Wonders,

I’ve always loved animals since childhood, but for a season in my adult life, I didn’t have any of my own. Work had taken over most of my days, and I made the hard decision to give up my two cats for adoption through KSPCA.

Then one day, a grey tabby with a bushy, fur-tipped tail appeared in our estate. She had this confident walk—climbing the stairs like she knew exactly where she was going. She wasn’t afraid of people, and she looked pregnant. I’d guess she was about two years old at the time.

She disappeared for a while, and when she reappeared, she looked thin. I later discovered her hiding spot—behind a water tank on the ground floor of our apartment block in Roysambu. She had given birth. The kittens were shy and scurried away every time I showed up with food. But she didn’t. She allowed me to care for her.

Eventually, she started following me home. She’d eat, nap, and then return to her babies by morning. Then on one early morning,  she showed up with her only surviving kitten. Just like that, I became a mum of two cats. I named the kitten Billy.

Both cats were later neutered at KSPCA, courtesy of Jean Gilchrist, the former Director. That gesture made all the difference in ensuring their long-term well-being.

Since then, I’ve relocated three times—and I’ve never left them behind. Where I go, they go because pets aren’t disposable—they’re family.

Missy Makes Her Choice

Although I wished I had Missy for life, she had other plans. She had chose my mum as her caregiver. And her calmness had already stolen my mum’s heart. When I eventually moved out of the same compound where my mum lived, Missy decided she’d stay with her. I tried bringing her back to my new place—a kilometre away—but she wouldn’t stay. She had found her rhythm: dinner at my house, then breakfast at my mum’s. In the end, I gave up and let her stay with the chosen one—my mum. Clearly I had been dumped.

From Stray to Queen

The interesting part—my mum never used to like cats. But Missy changed her. Missy’s food always tops her shopping list. She’s now 10 years old. She’s not big on petting. She prefers her space—no kittens, no chaos, just her own quiet company.

She’s also very disciplined. She never sits on the seats—instead, she rests on her bed, tucked neatly in the corner of the house. If she’s not outside at her favorite gate perch, she’s in her bed. That’s just Missy: calm, quiet, and full of grace.

Missy, a senior cat claimed a special spot at the gate where she perches each day, calmly watching people walk by. And without fail, she sits there waiting for my mum to return home. It’s her little throne—and from there, she rules her world.

Aging Gracefully, Watched With Love

Due to her advanced age, our vet is always on standby to offer any necessary medical care. My mum watches her closely, and any slight change in her appetite or behavior doesn’t go unnoticed.

And that’s how Missy, the once-stray tabby—who I rescued, then got dumped by—became the Queen of My Mum’s Heart.

Whisker Wonders Reflection

Some cats choose you. Others choose your mum. Either way, their love changes everything.
