I Sacrificed my Tuition to Save an Injured Stray Cat

By Whisker Wonders,

It was late when I saw what I thought was a dead cat in the road. Wanting to give his owner closure, I pulled over to move him and planned to take him to a vet the next morning. But as I reached for him, he moved his head—just barely—and let out the weakest meow I’ve ever heard. 🐾

I rushed him home, laid him gently on my bed, and started calling every vet in the area until I found one open. He was so light, like air. No microchip. The x-rays showed two broken legs and a rib. The vet said the bill would be high, and without an owner to take responsibility, the best option was euthanasia. I was told to leave the room.

But I couldn’t. I stayed. And then I realized—I couldn’t let that be the end. Someone out there had to be missing him. I used my school tuition to pay for his surgery. I ran ads. I searched. But no one came.

While he was in casts, he tried to follow me everywhere—his legs flailing like little paddles. That’s how he got the name Paddlefoot. Pad, for short. And nine years later, he’s still by my side.

If I could say anything, it would be this: Not all cats die on impact. Please stop if you hit one accidentally. Please check. You could be the only chance they have.
