By Whisker Wonders,
The last thing we ever think about is that, one day, our pets will die. It’s a painful truth—one we often tuck away until it hits us hard. But how do we prepare for their passing without drowning in guilt or regret? How do we grieve without being consumed by heartbreak?
Let me share a short story that changed my perspective.
The Loss That Taught Me to Always Give Your Best
A few years ago, I lost my sweet kitten Suss to Caricivirus. Suss came into my life at just two weeks old after her mother abandoned her and her sister, Lunah (then Blackie) at a friend’s compound. They were helpless, so I took them in.
I bottle-fed them, carried them to work, and watched them grow. They became the best of friends—and a big part of my world. They even had the same character, including sleeping with their heads tilted, one eye weirdly facing downward.
But life had other plans. At five months old, both Suss and Lunah got sick. Despite several visits to the vet, only Lunah recovered. Suss couldn’t make it.
I was heartbroken.
What Losing Suss Taught Me About Pet Love
In that moment of loss, one truth became clear:
“You never know what you’ve got until it’s gone.”
But we can make sure we love our pets so fully that when they leave, we are left with more gratitude than regret.
Here’s what I’ve learned—and what I hope every pet parent remembers:

a) Give Your Pets the Best While They’re Alive
Play with them. Spoil them with love and nutritious food. Let them chase their favorite toys. Take them for walks or let them bask in your attention. Be present. Be kind. Be their safe place.
b) Fight for Their Lives Where You Can
Vaccinate them. Take them for checkups. Don’t ignore signs of illness. Feed them if they can’t feed themselves. Advocate for their health like you would for a child.
When you treat your pets like royalty—like the Kings and Queens they are—you give them a life worth celebrating. And when that inevitable goodbye comes, your heart, while broken, will be full of love and beautiful memories.
In Loving Memory of Suss
RIP Suss. We’re already missing you. Your time was short, but your love was deep. Lunah is still waiting for a new playmate—but your paw prints will never fade.

At Whisker Wonders, we believe responsible pet ownership is about more than feeding and sheltering—it’s about loving deeply, caring consistently, and saying goodbye with no regrets. Losing Suss reminded us that even short lives can leave the deepest imprints.
So today, hug your furry friend a little tighter. Listen to their purrs, watch their playful hops, and soak in every moment. Because in the end, it’s not about how long they lived—it’s about how well they were loved.
