Luna’s Annual Christmas Holiday: A Home Away From Home

By Whisker Wonders Kenya,

It’s that time of the year again when my cat, Luna, goes on her annual holiday. Yes, a holiday. Not to the Coast, not to the famed cat city of Istanbul, and not to a boarding facility, but to my former landlady’s compound, where sun-kissed green grass welcomes her and kindness is woven into daily life.

How it all started

This arrangement didn’t begin easily. Five years ago, when I moved into her compound, I arrived with a declared truth: I was a cat woman.

At the time, I had just two furry companions, Missy and Billy and I made it clear from the start to secure a safe home for my little family.

What I didn’t anticipate was that my heart for rescue would grow, and with it, the number of cats passing through my care as I rescued, fostered, and rehomed them.

Strict landlady turned cat-lover

My landlady, who openly disliked cats, was very alert. At some point, she launched what I can only describe as an informal cat census. One day she confronted me, half-joking and half-serious, asking whether I was turning her compound into a shelter. She said she had counted ten cat tails so far.

We talked. We negotiated. And eventually, we reached an agreement. Only Luna, Missy, and Billy would remain as permanent residents. That was how Luna officially became a legal member of the household.

Something unexpected happened after that.

The same woman who once disliked cats slowly became their caregiver. She fed them chicken. Gave them water and watched over them. Without ceremony, she became my official and very happy cat sitter.

When I eventually moved out, I didn’t just leave a compound behind. I gained a trusted cat parent, someone always willing to offer animals a safe, loving space.

Luna’s annual holiday

So every Christmas, or whenever I travel, Luna goes back “home” to join Missy, who stayed behind. I arrive with food, water, and a warm bed in tow. These days, my former landlady is the one asking when I’m bringing her queen for the holidays.

Luna loves the green grass. She loves the calm. And she thrives in the hospitality.

If we had more souls like hers, the lives of pet parents everywhere would be far less stressful and a lot more hopeful.

Sometimes, love doesn’t announce itself. It simply makes space.

Whisker Wonders Reflection

This story shows how compassion is learned, not declared, growing from resistance into care. In a world where pet parents often choose between travel and worry, spaces of trust like this are rare, and kindness, given time, creates safe places where love settles in.
