Rescue Stories: Let’s Not Abandon Pets — They Are Family

By Whisker Wonders Kenya,

This past weekend alone, I received two heartbreaking rescue requests — not for cats this time, but for dogs, whose owners left them behind when they shifted houses in Nairobi.

The first pair were abandoned in Langáta. A kind-hearted neighbour spotted them — lost, hungry, and without shelter.

He wrote to me:

“My neighbour shifted and left two Chihuahuas in the compound. They’ve been there for over a month. Yesterday evening I saw one of them so dehydrated and my daughter told me the other one has a boil. They’re in bad shape. I’ve bought them food and will feed them until maybe KSPCA picks them up.”

True to his hope, the KSPCA Lang’ata team responded to my request and rescued them. 🐶❤️

The second case involved Claire and Fuji, a bonded pair abandoned in Kangemi. When good samaritans found them, they were so malnourished, yet still gentle and affectionate. Claire is also pregnant, and urgently needs a calm, loving foster home where she can safely give birth and raise her puppies before they’re all ready for adoption.

Despite everything, they still cling to each other — two souls who’ve lost everything except love and hope. 💔

What Does This Teach Us?

That abandonment is not an option. That pets are family.

When we bring a pet into our lives, we make a promise — one that doesn’t end when we move homes, change jobs, or face challenges.

Pets depend on us completely. They wait at the door. They trust that we’ll come back. And when we don’t, they suffer silently — hungry, confused, and heartbroken.

Abandoning pets doesn’t just cause individual suffering; it also adds to the growing number of stray animals struggling to survive on our streets. Many end up injured, starved, or breeding uncontrollably, creating an even larger cycle of neglect and hardship.

But it also teaches us something beautiful:
That compassion still exists — in the neighbour who fed the Chihuahuas, in the rescuers who stepped in for Claire and Fuji, and in everyone who chooses kindness over convenience.

Let’s Do Better

If you ever find yourself unable to keep your pet, please don’t abandon them. Reach out to KSPCA, Nairobi Feline Sanctuary, or any nearby rescue group or reach out to Whisker Wonders Kenya.

And if you can, open your home or heart to foster animals like Claire and Fuji. Sometimes, a little love is all it takes to turn despair into hope.

And because we should lead by example, I’ll share this: I’ve shifted homes three times with my cat Missy, who’s ten years old now. I’ve negotiated rental spaces to accommodate my cats and never tire of reminding others — don’t leave them your pets behind because they are family.

🐾 Whisker Wonders Reflection

Every rescue reminds us that the bond between humans and animals is sacred — built on trust and care. When we break it, we lose a piece of our own humanity.

Each act of neglect adds to the growing number of strays once loved but left behind.

Let’s choose compassion over convenience, and build a world where every pet is loved, valued, and never abandobed. ❤️
